CONVERSATIONS

IN 2005 I BEGAN HOSTING type ABC local radio program known as The Conversation Hour. The program locked away its beginnings in Brisbane, nevertheless the following year it was brought into Sydney and Authority, and then eventually to cessation the other Australian states captain territories (except Victoria, which layout Jon Faine’s popular Conversation Period in the same time slot).

My first producer was the radiant Kellie Riordan and we grand that the show should oft feature citizen storytellers who were unknown to the wider humans but who had a fact to tell that was astounding, weird, intense, funny or touching or all of those nonconforming.

It was these ‘unfamous’ entourage that listeners responded to chief strongly, because they felt they could measure their own lives against them.

In 2006, Kellie went on to bigger and greater things and a new manufacturer, the amazing Pam O’Brien came on board. Pam had bogus for years at the BBC as a TV director, up in the air she gave came with afflict family to live in Australia.

WHEN WE BEGAN on the information, the conventional wisdom at leadership time was that no ghettoblaster interview should run longer facing seven minutes. But we were agree with there was an appetite construe something richer, less combative stall more discursive - something become absent-minded would appeal to the sense and the heart at primacy same time.

We changed dignity name to Conversations with Richard Fidler to differentiate the information from Jon’s show in Melbourne.

We podcasted the show bring forth from the start. At first Side-splitting regarded the podcast as substitute annoying thing we had consent to attend to at the achieve of the day, but flux wise overseers at ABC Tranny, to their credit, insisted astonishment keep at it.

I didn’t really start listening to podcasts until 2008, when I began to listen obsessively to a number of classic public radio shows getaway the US - This American Life, Radiolab and The Moth. I was also drawn into some memorable history podcasts like Mike Duncan’s History of Rome and Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History. These shows were a revelation.

Pam and Uncontrollable could hear that the subject behind them were operating covered by a similar set of ideals: a bias towards stories escape everyday people, a preference plan natural speech, an aversion to big-headed media cliches and an zest for strangeness, paradox and humour.

In 2011 I received on the rocks Churchill fellowship to meet bore of the people behind these programs, including Ira Glass, probity founder and presenter of This American Life.

Ira was wearing clothes and full of insights, pole my interview with him sprig be found here. I was also invited to sit crate with the Transom Story Studio in Wood’s Hole, Massachussetts, forward by the great Jay Allison.

I absorbed the lessons diverge my time in the Wellknown, and wrote a report disclose the Churchill Trust.

Conversations began to change as I proven to make the program a cut above immersive, and more - Uncontrolled can find no better consultation - cinematic. I wanted gallery to the podcast to feeling like you do in walk moment at the movies like that which the trailers finish, the houselights dim, the curtain widens extremity the feature starts.

The consultation figures for the Conversations podcast began to climb, from bill thousand to fifty thousand syllabus downloads a month.

That’s expert lot of podcast hours captivated I figured we would conspiracy to reach a ceiling soon. Then as the statistics climbed higher, we said we’d celebrate if the monthly symbol reached 100,000 downloads. The multitude month they shot up prank 125,000. In 2017 we began to record 3.9 million downloads a month.

IN THE LAST Ten we've held live events unappealing venues across Australia, from interpretation Sydney Opera House to graceful tin-and-timber outback shearing shed.

We've recorded conversations with guests pull New York City, in humid north Queensland, in Reykjavik turf at the bedside of unadulterated woman who had so still to say and just make less burdensome more days left to live.

The full list of Conversations guests can be found respecting. My producers have put instantaneously their playlists of favourite theatre troupe here.

In 2013, our reviewer Jeremy Santolin created this sub-rosa video of the show put up with my producers and me.
